- Breaking Free From the Mind Made Prison
We all experience moments when we feel trapped and unable to make progress in life.
The main reason behind feeling stuck is being trapped in our own minds.
It’s the number one reason that people get stuck, procrastinate, or remain in avoidance of what they feel they must do.
When we’re stuck in our minds, we become emotionally blocked, trying to avoid certain emotions or situations or seeking a particular feeling.
But by doing so, we create a mental barrier that stops us from taking action.
So many people I deal with in my coaching practice, with my clients, with the trainee coaches, despite how much success they’ve had in their lives or in their previous or current careers, at some point feel stuck.
I call it a mind-made prison.
The first thing to recognise is, in reality, you can’t be stuck because there are always options available to us. If we feel stuck it’s because we’ve closed our minds to solutions and alternatives by convincing ourselves there’s no other way.
A common phrase that keeps us stuck is “I don’t know.”
I hear this all the time when I ask people, my coaches, when I ask my clients, ‘What’s causing this? What’s going on here?’
The answer is, “I don’t know.”
That statement is a dead-end road because it means you’re not going to look. It implies that there’s no possibility of a solution.
You’re never left without options in life.
Allah (swt ) is the Most Merciful, the Most Wise; Al-Hakim.
He (swt) wouldn’t create us all different, and then give us only one way to survive.
That’s the most important thing to realise.
Every person has choices, and you don’t need to blame anyone, not even yourself. The blame game keeps us stuck instead of focusing on a solution because blame is a problem focus.
There are always options. Allah (swt) would never leave you without options.
Allah (swt) says it:
He doesn’t burden a soul beyond its ability. No one is going to be burdened beyond what they can cope with.
Choice is an incredible power that we have. Recognising this is essential to being empowered and getting out of that feeling of being stuck.
You can choose to remain stuck or empower yourself by choosing an alternative reality.
It may be uncomfortable, or not what you’re familiar with but there’s always another way to move forward.
Choosing to remain stuck is not the only option, and it’s disempowering. Trust that Allah (swt) always provides solutions and ways out.
Even when it seems like there are no options, this perception is a choice in itself.
A lot of people get emotional when they feel stuck.
Getting emotional and having meltdowns won’t help when you’re feeling stuck. Emotional outbursts exacerbate the sense of being trapped and feeling hopeless.
Understanding that your feeling of being stuck is a misunderstanding and that your imagination is not reality is important for finding a way forward.
Recognise that there are options and that you have a choice, and just take small steps forward.
Take a step in a different direction, move even if it’s just a little, and you instantly start to see some change.
Embrace change, and you’ll create a new norm that doesn’t involve feeling stuck.
If you don’t like something in your life, change the way you approach it or what you’re doing. It will become much easier and you won’t feel stuck. Because you’ll be moving.
Stuck represents the same old, same old, while freedom comes from embracing change and exploring new paths.
The quicker you become comfortable with change, the sooner you’ll appreciate how different life can look.
Remember that you’re never truly stuck as long as you can see other options and exercise your power to choose
