How to Ensure Work Stress Doesn’t Affect Your Relationship
Many professionals, parents, carers, siblings and people just like you struggle with the same issues. Work related stress can have a debilitating effect on your work, life and family if left unchecked.
Picture this: You come home after a long day at work, hoping to unwind and spend quality time with your family. However, you just can’t seem to switch off.
Your mind is still racing at a million miles an hour, you’re on edge, making it difficult for you to connect with your spouse, your kids and anyone that is around at the time. You just can’t seem to escape this cycle of stress.
The truth is, you’re not alone. This is something that so many of us are getting stuck in almost daily.
You might find you’re constantly having this internal dialogue and asking, “Why isn’t my life getting any easier?”
It may seem that your family is just adding to your stress. You ask question yourself;
“Why is my spouse so difficult?” “She/ he just doesn’t understand what I’m going through” “They don’t understand the amount of stress I’m under, what’s wrong with them?”
But, hang on. Is the problem really them?
The reality is it’s the way you’re responding to stress.
The first step to a resolution is, you’ve got to recognise what’s actually happening in this situation.
To resolve this, and create calm you need awareness.
The majority of us are unaware of how our thinking patterns add to the stress and disconnect we’re experiencing.
When you’re stressed at work, your judgement can become clouded. So, it’s not that your family, spouse or kids are a burden, or that your relationships are just difficult.
It’s the constant stress, overthinking, and feeling on edge that spills over into your relationships at home.
The good news is that this can be resolved.
The key is recognising the problem and then addressing it at its core.
Rather than trying to manage your time and relationships, the focus should be on how your mind responds to stress.
The Science of the Nafs process teaches us that our thinking shapes our emotions and behaviours.
The vast majority of my students, before they come through the Nafs Coaching School and truly learn how to manage their mind and emotions, struggle to see what’s really happening in their lives. They don’t understand why they feel the way they do, and why their results are always contrary to what they want.
The only thing they can clearly identify is that there’s a lot of stress.
As professionals, we often neglect our own well-being, instead focusing on all the external fixes. However, real change begins by taking control of our thoughts and emotions.
It’s one of the foundational principles in the Science of the Nafs Psychology.
To ensure we’re living a more balanced life, we have to examine our thoughts, feelings, and subsequent reactions.
This isn’t about blaming ourselves, or others, or circumstances.
It’s totally about understanding, awareness, and a commitment to change.
By recognising the problem, you’ll no longer need to offset your stress onto work, family, or distractions.
So, to simplify it, go to what is actually happening, slow down and look at what’s creating all the stress, anxiety and fear. What is going on in your mind and your emotions?
How are you showing up in your life?, what are your behaviours?, and why are you doing it all?
As you go through this process, you’re going to learn how to recognise the problem, see it for what it is, then take steps to resolve it without blame.
When you’re able to see the problems, then you’re in a position to change them.
Acknowledging the issues and committing to change, we’re taking the first step towards a much better outcome inshAllah.
